Vintage Movie Posters - Your Favorite Student Will Love You For Them!

by Daniel Wright

Current "in style" and hot trends can always be easily identified on a college campus. In the 1960's and 1970's co-eds decorated their rooms with lavish lava lamps and beads in their doorways, psychedelic colored posters adored each wall and black lights were "groovy" to have around. In the 1990's lava lamps made a huge comeback in nearly every college girl's dorm room, beads were once again hung in doorways in campuses across America and psychedelic posters were resurrected on white dorm walls. Even black lights made an appearance to even out the trend. So, what are this year's college freshmen using as the prime theme of decor for their dorm rooms?

From UCLA to Hudson University and all points in between vintage movie posters seem to be the thing. Even girls who were not even thought of when "Breakfast at Tiffany's" debuted are very much into posters of Audrey, dark sunglasses and pearls. A-list hits such as "scarface" and D-list hits like "Evil Dead are popping up on walls daily. Movie memorabilia is not referring to just black and white posters anymore.

What draws young men and women back to the drive in, to old fashioned movies made in black and white? It's not clear why they want to watch these classics again and again, but maybe 20 somethings crave a return to simpler times, when the world wasn't so complicated and humor was just for fun.

Merchandising makes millions. At times, merchandising for films can make more than the film itself. With vintage movie posters being more popular than ever, college poster sales all around the country are making a killing selling out of old "Dracula" and "The Blob" posters, even more so than posters of recent films. From figurines and accessories to catch phrase t-shirts and movie posters, everything from your favorite feature film can be bought and sold.

Posters can bring back the magic of another time and a fantasy of what might have been. They can help capture the spirit of a time you wish you lived in or help to keep memories alive. Some students put up posters to remind them of childhood or high school, some put them up to let other know who they are. Independent art/film posters and vintage movies posters use to only be displayed on the walls of film students, but the audience for them now, is so much larger.

If you are looking for the perfect gift for your niece or nephew, son or daughter, or that special college student in your life, look no further than a movie poster displaying Faye Dunaway or Elvis. They were popular then and they are popular now. Watch them unroll the poster and reveal a smile and don't forget to hang onto the posters you love today. Who knows, in twenty years, they may be the next hot trend.
