The Definition of Goth Style
Goth style is first and foremost about freedom of expression and portraying one's individuality. The Goth lifestyle is most popular among teens, but it is not uncommon for people in their twenties or even older to adopt it as well. The three main aspects of this style are clothing and accessories, hair, and make-up.
Although black is the main color that nearly defines Goth fashion, black outfits are most often combined with heavy pewter jewelry and other distinct accessories, such as velvet tights or fishnet stockings. Although black is still the most commonly used clothing color among Goths, dark or bright jewel tones are being used more often to contribute to the feel of punk rock, the subculture from with the Goth style originated.
We can't forget the hair, another important aspect of Goth style. Hair has a lot of potential here. It is the one part of the body that's the easiest to style into an endless variety of different looks. Goths tend to dye their hair and/or wear wigs.
Colors vary widely, ranging anywhere from black to pink, but typically the hair is limited to a single flat color... or else a color that contrasts sharply with big highlights. When it comes to Goth hair, "subtle" is a word that does not apply. Anything from shaved heads, blunt cuts, bobs, angled cuts, and Mohawks are acceptable in Goth fashion. All of these hair styles may be worn by girls, boys, men or women.
Goth style make-up also includes a lot of black. Look into a Goth make up kit and you will probably find dark mascara, black liquid eye liner, and even black lipstick in there. Both women and men wear make-up to enhance their unique style. Some Goths will inject color into their make-up with dark red lipstick or even colored fake eyelashes. Many use a white foundation or cheek color for the sake of contrast.
